Serial port server, also known as serial server or port redirector, is a device that transfers data between a computer's serial port (COM port) and an Ethernet local area network (LAN). It uses Ethernet instead of serial cables, reducing workstation clutter while allowing serial devices to be placed away from the computer.
Serial port servers can be used for all serial devices and peripherals, including printers, scanners. data collection terminals, display devices, modems, automation devices, security and alarm systems, and temperature control systems. Most serial port servers allow multiple serial devices to be connected to a single serial port. Some serial port servers can also work across an Internet Protocol (IP) Wide Area Network (WAN), making it possible to access remote serial devices as if they were connected directly to the COM port of a personal computer or network server; such serial port servers are sometimes called Ethernet modems.
